Engagement sessions really shine when we (the photographer and the client) follow a few basic guidelines.
1. Be yourself.
2. Have fun.
3. Repeat 1 and 2.
When I meet with couples I always suggest two looks and at least two locations. The first look should be somewhat casual and the second should be a bit more formal. This isn't a requirement, it's just a starting point. Venessa, Colin, Caroline (from Mint To Be Weddings) and I met, brainstormed over some wine and came up with a few elements that we wanted in the images: their pup, a graffiti wall and if possible, a vintage car. Done, done and done. While shooting and moving from location to location, a few other fun ideas popped into our heads and together, we really produced a great shoot. Go team!
Summer & Alberto.
These two were so much fun to work with. They were visibly in love and sometimes that's all I need for a great engagement session. Beautiful fall colors, water and sunset lighting only added to the romance. Congratulations, I can't wait for your wedding in the Dominican Republic!
A fall engagement session for a June wedding was a perfect choice for Nicole and John.
I would love to share details about these two, but I'll save that for their wedding post! :) All I know is that these two are some of the most down to earth, fun-loving, spirited people I know---and that's HUGE.
Congratulations you two! Special thanks to the Frenchman's Daughter for her amazing makeup skills. :)
As a photographer, I am a whim to the subjects who find themselves in front on my camera. I am in awe of the power that comes with the combination of subject, light and composition all within a tiny viewfinder. After upload, I try not to do a ton of editing. So last week, I challenged myself. Meet Angel. Her portrait series is below. What started out as a simple portrait session turned into something incredibly fun. I knew Angel was beautiful and confident but she took direction so well, so we played around and I am so pleased with the outcome! I also have a knack for makeup, and I tried a new trick using a reddish orange lipstick directly on Angel's skin to even out her tone. See the tutorial here. I find this technique is not just great for dark circles but really works for contour and balance too!
When you first walk into Elder, the viewer is immediately impressed. The floor plan is open and inviting and as you walk around exploring the playful heights and corners of the gallery, your senses are going through what feels like a relaxing massage. Texture, color, anthropomorphic sculptures, carefully organized architecture and thoughtful details will always come to mind when I think of Elder. My absolute favorite part is that Mr. Elder leaves his storage of works exposed.. and what you have is what feels like a library. Canvases instead of books, oils and acrylics instead of words, color shape and movement in lieu of a story line. Canvases upon canvases fill the shelves and even lean against the walls. I had an honest sense of privilege (as if it were some exclusive preview) seeing what most galleries hide in their stock room. I absolutely adore this gallery. I hope to return again soon.
From instagram @havivenstein:
As Mr. Elder said during the dinner, the space is available for rent so keep this gallery in mind! He says he's not too formal, bring your kids (because of course "they need to learn how to behave" which I love) and come at any time. He loves to talk about art and is always happy to discuss a certain piece, artist or collection.
Of course, my favorite piece was 15k (One day!). However, there are quite a few afordable pieces (~$500), so from a customers' standpoint this gallery is approachable for any budget.
Keep on doing what you're doing Mr. Elder and Chef Phillipe. Thank you Rachel de Bernardo from Queen City Catering for this experience. I sincerely look forward to working with your awesome team again soon!
