"love in an elevator"
This engagement session was so fantastic, so unexpectedly awesome and just so all around perfect I immediately went home and wrote down some "notes" from the day. Vanessa, José and I spent a little over 2 hours hopping from one location to another, dreaming up new shots, poses, entertaining new ideas with such ravenous energy and excitement we just knew we were onto something special.
We started off with a rough start. See the room below? It's gorgeous right? Look at those smooth lines and modern architecture feel, a signature of uptown Charlotte.. and check out the light... Photographers only dream of that light when shooting indoors!!
Well... it was locked. I shot this through the glass... like a child looking through the window into a candy shop... a tear gently rolling down my sullen cheeks.
This room apparently is only open M-F during business hours. Okay, so now we know! We tried to find another spot in the building to shoot in but had no luck. While traversing through a menagerie of elevators Vanessa made a remark "you have to go down before you go up." We all looked at each other puzzlingly and José says: "that's an incredibly philosophical statement." And when we finally realized we'd have to move on to another location; I felt positive. So I said: You have to go down before you go up. And that became our mantra for the shoot.
This is the first series we started with. And for a warm up; I have to say... wow!
I learned so much from this shoot.
One; there's no telling where the shoot will take you.
"You can plan a pretty picnic but you can't predict the weather."
Two; a couple's energy is absolutely KEY for a successful shoot. Vanessa and José were so ready for anything, and it really felt like we were all taking turns inspiring each other with new ideas.
Three; work with where you are. Part of my job is to be a magician, to create a fantasy world with my camera. At one point Vanessa said "we didn't want to shoot uptown because we didn't want it to look like everyone else's pictures... but tonight, I feel like it looks like we were in New York!"
Or maybe Mount Olympus?
Oh goodness, I am so happy with this shoot! I hope you've enjoyed reading this post as much as I've enjoyed posting!
